Position Description

IRSTEA, the National Institute for Research in Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture (https://www.irstea.fr) is a public research institute in France focusing on natural resource management issues (land, water resources) and agricultural technology. In 2020 it will merge with INRA (National Institute of Agricultural Research which is the public research institute dedicated to agricultural science ) to form INRAE

The European COASTAL project funded by the European Union (https://h2020-coastal.eu) aims at improving synergies between coastal and rural areas using system and multi-stakeholder approaches. In the framework of this project, we would like to recruit a dynamic research associate/fellow specialised in modelling and with strong skills and experience in System Dynamics. The position is located at IRSTEA Bordeaux Centre (https://www.irstea.fr/fr/irstea/nos-centres/Bordeaux) in the team EADT (Environment, Actors, Territorial Development) of the ETBX Research Unit., Working within the COASTAL project, our aim is to advance the understanding of the social, economic and political dynamics in different economic sectors  (such as particularly agricultural, forestry, tourism, ports, fisheries, aquaculture, ) in connection with environmental changes at the scale of rural, coastal and peri-urban areas. The objective of the project is to help identify strategies for sustainable and inclusive development at the regional level in partnership with stakeholders.

Your Job

In close collaboration with the project team and as part of the modelling team

  • Collect and format relevant model input data,
  • Analyse the multi-dimensional challenges facing rural and coastal areas within the French case study in the economic, social and environmental policy realms,
  • Develop hypotheses for problematic dynamic behaviour, formulate and validate computer simulation models, and design policies to improve systemic behaviour-based and solution oriented policy insights,
  • Understand how the system dynamics approach can be useful for formulating policies aimed at promoting sustainability and development of the territory of the MultiActorLab (Charente river basin),
  • Support the development of the system dynamic models designed for the French case study using VENSIM PLE by building, simulating and testing systems models
  • Analyse with the project’s team and partners the structural causes of problem behaviour and model outputs and its contribution in developing and evaluating policies,
  • Develop and analyse scenarios for the MultiActorLab,
  • Draft high-quality reports aimed primarily at project reportings, and other written outputs.
  • Present the model outputs to project partners and stakeholders, and contribute to the work of the Mutual Learning Group for Multi-dimensional country review,
  • With the project team, strengthen existing collaborations with decision-makers in the public and private sectors at the regional level to create synergies for rural and coastal zones,
  • Supervise the work of trainees if needed.
Your Profile
  • An advanced University degree (PhD or Master) in environmental sciences, or computer sciences with gained experience in programming modelling with specialisation in System Dynamics (e.g. European master degree in System Dynamics)
  • Relevant experience in conducting and managing applied systems dynamics and developing analysis oriented towards policy recommendations as evidenced by publications.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of systems thinking and modelling
  • Experienced in policies scenarios and environment challenges (water, biodiversity...)    
  • Proven ability to conduct research and associated activities within time limits.
  • Good interpersonal communication and networking skills.
  • Ability to draft clear, concise and high-quality documents.
  • Ability to cooperate in an interdisciplinary and international team
  • Familiar with VENSIM is an asset
  • Fluency in English and preferably (but not mandatory) knowledge of French

  • Full-time position with the option of slightly reduced working hours
  • Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (salary range will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate)
Contract Duration
