Position Description

The tasks undertaken by the successful candidate will inform strategic decisions facing policy makers, industry representatives, State and Federal government agencies and R&D portfolio managers by capturing the development of renewable energy technologies and related supply chains. Model development will involve applying system dynamics to capture the evolution of the renewable fuels, electricity, and chemicals industries; once developed, these models will be applied via simulation to address research questions of interest to clients. Specific research tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Conceive and implement novel modeling and analysis methods to assess the implications of technology development.
  • Analyze potentially transformative changes such as the evolution of nascent renewable industries and technology development and commercialization under various scenarios that may include different market structures and alternative policies.
  • Translate analysis results into effective and influential communication products and decision-support tools tailored to client requests and audience requirements, including high-quality journal publications, technical reports, conference presentations, and publicly released open-source models.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research proposals.

Desired Education, Experience and Skills

  • Experience in system dynamics modeling, using STELLA, Vensim, or PowerSim
  • Experience in using R and/or Python to build and apply computational models
  • Familiarity with renewable energy (including biofuels and electricity) and/or chemicals
  • Degrees/backgrounds of particular interest: engineering, biofuels, renewable chemicals, data science, computer science, economics, and statistics.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelors Degree or Advanced Degree.

Additional Qualifications

General knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

 

The ideal candidate would possess at least some of the following preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with analysis of computer models and simulations
  • Statistics coursework and/or experience
  • Knowledge of relational databases, with SQL preferred
  • Experience using Matlab, Julia, and/or Java to build and apply computational models
