The Sax Institute is a leading Australian expert body in helping decision makers find and make best use of research to solve real-world health and social problems.

The Director, Decision Analytics reports to the Head, Evidence for Action Division. Call for Papers - Special Issue of Mind & Society on Advanced Modelling of Organizational Behaviour (December 18)

Over the last decades, psychological research has often highlighted that the theory of “rational” decision-making eventually prescribes choices from which humans systematically deviate. Remarkably, several Nobel laureates including Herbert Simon (1978), Daniel Kahneman (2002) and Richard Thaler (2017) have been prized for developing more realistic theories of human behavior and interaction.

In line with these theoretical developments, novel modelling methods have been proposed that allow more realistic descriptions of actual organizational behaviour. In particular, computational methods and statistical techniques allow nowadays to capture dynamics of latent psychological constructs and reproduce the emergence of novel organizational features. Ideally, these methods strive for recreating the complexity of macroscopic organizational structures without losing sight of individual human behavior.

The present call for special issue aims to collect a series of contributions (including original research articles, reports, or reviews) where such methods are employed in order to capture organizational dynamics. Potential methods to be applied to organizational studies include, but are not limited, to the following list: Agent-based modeling, Latent Class Growth Analysis, Hidden Markov chains, Pattern analysis, Nonlinear dynamical processes, Network analysis, Nonlinear regression, Growth curve modeling, Recurrence quantification analysis.

Position summary: Climate Interactive (CI) seeks to hire a modeler with climate and/or energy system modeling experience. CI is currently engaged in modeling climate policy and related topics including the energy system, climate smart agriculture, and urban impacts.

Climate Interactive (www.ClimateInteractive.org) creates and uses system dynamics computer simulations to help decision-makers see what works to address complex social and environmental issues such as mitigating climate change, accelerating the transition to clean energy, and building climate resilience.

The Senior Modeler is responsible for developing and testing system dynamics computer simulations of climate and energy policy issues, carrying out analyses, and engaging clients and stakeholders in model simulations. Additional responsibilities include writing and editing media for CI.

Society Member JD Caddell, of the U.S. Military Academy, is featured in an article highlighting his research, "Using system dynamics to set strategic priorities to address human trafficking." (December 12)

"Many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) work to reduce human trafficking but often fail to understand the context and environment before taking action, resulting in ineffective and sometimes detrimental policies. JD Caddell, U.S. Military Academy, studied how girls were lured and trafficked by reframing the situation as a supply chain and looking at both supply and demand.

"Caddell's study, 'Using system dynamics to set strategic priorities to address human trafficking,' revealed that NGO's actions aimed solely at removing girls from the system yields few long-term benefits and creates more victims in the long run while raid and rescue operations only yields short-term gains."

'"Climate change is connected to politics, business, societal conflicts and inter-generational conflicts. It is the result of the most complex system and it is very hard to understand."

The games demonstrate difficulties in making decisions and communication among members of society.

"The games have two lessons: "One should not blame others, rather examine the structure that makes inevitable behavior. Another is (to realize) that today's problem comes from yesterday's solution," Chung said.'

Society member Bill Grace presents ‘Engineering the Transition to Sustainability’ at the World Engineers Convention (December 4)

Society member Bill Grace presented his paper entitled ‘Engineering the Transition to Sustainability’ at the recently held World Engineers Convention (WEC) in Melbourne, Australia. WEC is a four yearly event hosted by the World Federation of Engineering Organisations which operates under the auspices of UNESCO and brings together national engineering institutions from some 100 nations and represents more than 30 million engineers.

Bill’s paper uses system dynamics simulations and causal loop diagrams to critique the UN Sustainable Development Goals and explore the concept and limitations of the circular economy. The paper also explores the role of engineers in creating the climate and biodiversity crisis, and the criticality of their role in meeting the contemporary challenges.

Center for the Ecological Civilization (CEC) at Peking University looking for two post-doc positions (December 2)

CEC will focus on issues that will help China accelerate its planned transition to sustainability in 2050 – or in Chinese language: The transition to the ecological civilization. Work will be done via problem-oriented, cross-disciplinary work with a dynamic perspective – ideally relying on system dynamics thinking and analyses.

Four initial projects are under consideration:

  1. Green transition strategy for China to 2050 – mapping consistent paths
  2. Tracking the human impact on the natural world – mapping the ecological footprint
  3. Financing the green transition – using wise central bank policy
  4. Replacing equilibrium with dynamic thinking in national planning – a new growth model.

To understand more about these projects, they will build on: 1) Earth3, 2) ESCIMO, 3) modern monetary theory, and 4) MODCAP.

American University of Beirut offering a 3-credit graduate course in System Dynamics taught by Society member Dr. Samir Traboulsi (November 26)

For the Fall term (2019-2020), the American University of Beirut - Department of Industrial Engineering, is offering a 3-credit graduate course ENMG 659 System Dynamics. This course is taught by Society member Dr. Samir Traboulsi. It is the first time a System Dynamics course is offered at the Faculty of Engineering of AUB).

The roots of the Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) department at the American University of Beirut are in the Engineering Management (EM) graduate program. The EM program was founded in 1990 and was open for engineering graduates with an original focus on operations research and project management. Over the years, the EM program grew to become one of the most popular graduate programs at AUB with additional concentration areas in financial engineering and technology management. In August 2014, the EM program began offering undergraduate courses in Industrial Engineering (IE). In August 2015, the IEM department was established housing both a new undergraduate IE program and the legacy EM program.

Currently, the number of full-time undergraduate students in the IE program is around 200, and the number of graduate students in the EM program is around 60. IEM currently has seven faculty members who pursue world-class research on a variety of topics at the forefront of IE and EM. Future plans include growing the faculty body, increasing the undergraduate student enrollment, and offering a Ph.D. program.

Members Eric Wolstenholme and Douglas McKelvie have published a new book: ‘The Dynamics of Care - Understanding People Flows in Health and Social Care’, with a foreword from Jack Homer. The book was published in October 2019 as an e-book (https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-21878-2) and the printed version will be available in November 2019.

As the title suggests, the book is dedicated to practical system dynamics work in one field - health and social care. It describes the core stock/flow and feedback structures used to represent treatments and conditions and narrates a selection of consultancy projects from over 80 undertaken by the authors over recent years. Emphasis is placed on the insights generated into some of the most persistent issues of the day in this field.


The Georgia Health Policy Center announces the release of the book chapter, "Systems Thinking and the Opioid Epidemic in Georgia" (November 20)

The Georgia Health Policy Center is proud to announce the release of the book chapter, "Systems Thinking and the Opioid Epidemic in Georgia" in A Public Health Guide to Ending the Opioid Epidemic (Eds. Jay C. Butler and Michael R. Fraser). The chapter uses systems thinking and the center’s Opioid Systems Map to illuminate the complex, interrelated factors driving this public health crisis. The systems map enables visual identification of the cultural and social factors, as well as the structural aspects of the health care system that are driving the current epidemic and serves as a tool for policymakers to collectively study and develop insights toward coordinated interventions that can lessen and prevent opioid misuse.


Japan Chapter of System Dynamics Society welcomed Professor Jorgen Randers's Special Lecture (November 19)

On Novemebr 17, the Japan Chapter of the System Dynamics Society welcomed Professor Randers for a Special Lecture at The United Nations University in Tokyo. Professor Randers delivered a lecture about his Earth System Climate Interpretable Model (ESCIMO) model. The audience learned the importance of modeling strategy and insights from the model. 

The ESCIMO is a simple system dynamics model "which runs on a desktop computer in seconds and is able to reproduce the main output from more complex climate models. ESCIMO represents the main causal mechanisms at work in the Earth system and is able to reproduce the broad outline of climate history from 1850 to 2015.

The collection was assembled by Jay in the last two years of his life. It contains 61 papers he considered his most important statements about the dynamics of social systems, ranging from corporations and cities to global issues and K-12 education, from the methods of system dynamics to some of its historically important applications. At Jay's request, the collection has been edited by George Richardson, providing the overall chapter organization and short prefaces for each chapter and article to place them in context. A companion collection of Jay's writings on Economic Dynamics, edited by Robert Eberlein, is in the works.

Society member, Sander Zeijlemajker will elaborate how the observed dynamics relevant to cyber security investment decision making are incorporated in a cyber-security game. He will elaborate on the process of designing this game. 

During ISDC 2019 Sander presented the paper: "results from the cyber-security game: decision makers may have difficulties in appreciating dynamic complex systems."

This paper is about the development of a new system dynamics game in the field of cyber-security. Games provide a realistic and secure approach to learning and experimenting, which in turn can be used to build security awareness among participants. This game goes beyond traditional attacker-defender interaction and includes business operations, finance and decision making.

Yutaka Takahashi, a society member and Japan Chapter Vice President, published a new systems thinking
book with Professor Kazuo Hiekata. The title is "Systems thinking changes business." (The Japanese title is "Systems thinking ga mono-koto-dukuri wo kaeru.") It guides business executives in systems thinking including SD. Yutaka is a professor of SD at Senshu University in Japan.

New Paper from member, Hazhir Rahmandad; Interdependence, complementarity, and ruggedness of performance landscapes

Hazhir Rahmandad’s new paper in strategy science with a novel and important model showing how complementarities among managerial choices lead to performance landscapes with only a small number of distinct performance peaks (equilibria in strategy space), even when there are many choices and interdependencies among them. This is extremely important as it contrasts sharply with a large literature in strategy suggesting that slow learning and convergence to similar strategies and performance is due to so-called “rugged performance landscapes” in which there is a very large number of local peaks, causing agents/firms to become stuck on different local optima.

Hazhir’s new model includes the famous NK model of rugged landscapes as a special case and provides new insight into the evolution of complementarities and how boundedly rational agents may still learn slowly even when the performance landscape has only a small (e.g. 1-2) number of peaks.

Joint European Doctoral Network In System Dynamics launches (October 2)

We are excited to announce the launch of the Joint European Doctoral Network in System Dynamics (http://esdphd.com/), an interdisciplinary PhD network in advanced system dynamics. The network involves faculty from the Universities of Bergen, Lugano, and Stuttgart, the New University of Lisbon, Radboud University (Nijmegen), and from emlyon business school (Lyon).

The conference will be held at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia’s third largest city. UQ is one of the largest universities in Australia, being ranked within the top 50 universities in the world.

The 2nd South African System Dynamics Chapter Competition in Africa

The South Africa System Dynamics Chapter was officially recognised at the 2014 Winter Policy meeting of the international System Dynamics Society, when Motion #119 was passed. All policy council members support the objectives of the Chapter which is to:

  • Promote understanding and awareness of system dynamics as a problem solving approach to many of the Africa-based problems;
  • Identify, develop, extend and disseminate knowledge contributing to the understanding of feedback systems in Africa;
  • Promote the development of the field of System Dynamics and the free interchange of learning, research  and scholarship in all related fields; and
  • Encourage and develop educational programmes in the feedback behaviour of systems in Africa.

 The Chapter is very dependent on sponsorship, support and collaboration from external parties and has been actively supporting the growth and acceleration of SD skills in South Africa and Africa. One such initiative is the annual system dynamics competition which is in its second year running. The competition case study is provided to the interested entrants 2 months before the SASD Conference (now in its 7th year held annually in November). The Conference is used as the platform to present prizes to the winners and to provide them an opportunity to elaborate on their SD approach. This year, the annual SASD Chapter competition was magnanimously supported by iSee Systems who provided trial licences for iSee Stella Architect software to all the entrants, besides a fantastic software prize to the overall winner (who will be announced at the 7th annual SASD Chapter Conference being held in Stellenbosch, South Africa on the 14th November 2019). A one day system dynamics workshop was held on the 21st September 2019 as a refresher for experienced modellers and as a support initiative for new modellers who will be participating in the competition. The workshop was facilitated by Dr Andries Botha and Corne du Plooy and supported by Danie Booyens and Dr Rudolph Oosthuizen, who are all policy council members of the SASD Chapter. The resounding success of the SASD Chapter competition due to support from iSee systems will allow the competition to be extended beyond the African borders in the coming years.  

 The SASD Chapter would like to thank iSee Systems for their excellent support of the competition which will help grow system dynamics and provide new opportunities for system dynamicists in Africa!  

 CCS’19 Satellite Session: Complex decision making in high-consequence environments

During the Conference on Complex Systems 2019 (CCS’19) http://event.ntu.edu.sg/ccs2019/Pages/Home.aspx to be held at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Argonne and University of Chicago Computational Social Scientist Ignacio J. Martinez-Moyano, along with Alexander Kalloniatis (Defence Science & Technology Group /Australian Government), will host a special satellite session, “Complex decision making in high-consequence environments: Exploring the dynamic interplay of social, behavioral, and technical considerations leading to conflict, crime, security, and resilience.” https://www.anl.gov/event/complex-decision-making-in-highconsequence-environments This session is a follow-on to the 2016, 2017, and 2018 CCS satellite sessions on security and will expand its focus to include processes that lead to conflict, crime, security, and resilience.

Decision-making processes are at the core of how organizations and individuals deal with the causes and consequences of high-impact events. Often in complex systems, because of their inherent unpredictability and because of multiple non-linear effects and time delays in how systems respond, decisions made to address current problems or to prevent future problems are the reason why problems persist over time or emerge in the future.

This session will focus on complex decision making in high-consequence environments. In particular, we intend to explore the dynamic interplay of social, behavioral, and technical considerations leading to conflict, crime, security, and resilience.

Examples of topics that will be addressed are modeling complex systems and their decision-making structures; analysis of escalation and de-escalation of conflict and violence and increases and decreases in criminal activity and organizations; design of decision-making processes to increase security and resilience; adversarial decision making and behavior; mechanisms to reduce ambiguity into uncertainty; and structural considerations needed for stability and instability in complex systems.

The intent of this satellite session is to provide a space in which we will share knowledge and insights about how complex decision making in high-consequence environments can contribute to making the world a more resilient and safer place! We aim to stimulate interactions between practitioners and complexity scientists in this increasingly challenging area.

Engaged teaching and learning of system dynamics using LEGO®  SERIOUS PLAY ® at Sustainable Development Programme, Stellenbosch University (June 19)

In the 2019 System Dynamics Modelling 771 module, Professor Josephine Musango, the Coordinator and facilitator of the module, invited Dr Jenson Goh from Residential College 4, National University of Singapore who is a certified facilitator of the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY method and expert in using games pedagogy for teaching and learning. 

 The 2019 class constituted of 16 students who were divided into four groups of four students working on the issues of gender-based violence (Gender-Based Violence Group), management of menstrual health at school (Bloody Mary Group), the dilemma of social media users (So Much Pressure Group) and the challenge of meeting electricity for urban population (The Spark Group). System Dynamics Newsletter Submittal  (April 9)

During the past 12 months, the Psychology and Human Behavior SIG has met every four to five weeks. We discuss the application of system dynamics to sociology and history. We are going through Turner’s book “Human Institutions: A Theory of Societal Evolution.” We are exploring the possibility of creating system dynamics models of his theories. Society Member, David Lane, Gives Opening Speech at Operational Research Society Conference  (April 3)

Professor Lane, a Fellow of the Operational Research Society (ORS), gave the opening speech at the conference entitled ‘Building productivity, insight and foresight for your business: How computational modelling can help business and industry’. He also participated in a panel discussion later on in the day. In his talk, he described his extensive experiences as a modeler in business and government in order to motivate the day. He emphasized the benefits of combining the analytical power of modelling with its use as a mean of getting managers to participate in strategic discussions. For more information please click here

News from Korean Chapter  (February 25)

The winter conference, one of the biannual conferences since 2000, entitled " Resilience and Sustainability in Korea" was held on February 23th at Seoul Business School in Seoul, South Korea. This conference was the 40th conference since 1999 and began with the keynote speech "Who can move the mountain? SD is the story about people." by Professor Ki-Chan Kim who is a professor of business administration of the Catholic University of Korea and the chairman of the Innovation-driven Economy Division of the National Economy Advisory Council. There were six plenary presentations and one poster presentation, and 40 participants. Visit the online album here. The 41st conference will be the summer conference with the 20th Anniversary of Korean System Dynamics Celebration.

From the annual general meeting at the end of the conference, Dr. Chang-Kwon Chung was re-appointed the President of Korean System Dynamics Society for a second consecutive term until 2020.

Call for Papers: The Second National Conference of the Iranian Chapter of System Dynamics Society  (February 18, 2019)

The Second National Conference of the Iranian Chapter of System Dynamics Society will take place on April 24-25, 2019, at Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran. The purpose of this conference is to develop the knowledge of systems thinking and System Dynamics methodology to facilitate solving the national and organizational problems in Iran.

Society members Kaveh Dianati and Nici Zimmermann from UCL (University College London), together with other colleagues in an international research project, have just published a paper in the high-ranking environmental journal Science Of The Total Environment. In this paper, they report on work they have been doing in Nairobi, Kenya, on the topic of household air pollution. More than half of Nairobi’s population live in slums. Most of these households use kerosene, charcoal, or wood for cooking, leading to very high indoor concentrations of PM2.5, a major threat for the health of the population. The authors have used a Group Model Building approach to build a System Dynamics model that highlights the importance of reinforcing feedback processes involving investment in monitoring and health impact assessment studies, with important implications for policy.
